A New Year message from Sara, our President

A belated Happy New Year to you all. I hope you managed to enjoy Christmas despite the restrictions and that you have remained healthy. Let’s hope we all get the jab soon and life can return to some sort of normality.

Despite the pandemic your Committee are constantly thinking of ways to keep in touch and to give you something to look forward to. Chris Reid has produced a draft cruising programme for the summer and I’m sure many of you will want to join in some of the cruises which will be a mixture of local day sails and trips further afield. Before sailing starts we have put together some Zoom talks starting at the end of January with a talk from Paul Simpson and Ann Varlow. See below for further details. Keep an eye out for an email on how to join in the meetings.

Finally for those who may be on your own and feeling a bit isolated I am always at the end of the ‘phone if you would like a chat.

Sara Lloyd

President

Cruising Programme

Our Cruising Officer Chris, has put together a draft cruising programme, which can be downloaded HERE. The programme is provisional due to the situation with Covid 19 and our inability to predict what restrictions will apply as the year progresses. Chris has a lack of volunteers to coordinate cruises and this will be addressed in a later formal issue. A new feature is a medium length cruise on 1-3 June going beyond St Aldhelms Head to Swanage, Studland or Poole with a day trip to Wareham by ferry if the Poole option is chosen.

America's Cup (Prada Cup Challenge)

For those interested in the America's Cup racing, the pre-race competitions (Prada Cup Challenge) are happening in New Zealand at the moment. The racing is at weekends, and live coverage as well as videos of previous events, are available on YouTube or via the Official website:

I watched last weekend's events and it was amazing. Ben Ainslie and the British INEOS Team are doing exceedingly well. These boats are pushing 50kn . . . Weymouth to Cherbourg in just over an hour . . . eeek!!

Special Offer

John Atkinson is offering free to any WPCA member a working Navman Depth 3100 display, unused but with no transducer. First Come . . .etc. Give John a ring if you are interested (Numbers on Fleet and Boat Lists). Click HERE to view

Brain Teaser

As part of our programme of eliminating boredom, here is another brain teaser (participation optional).

You have 24 coins, and you are told that one is a fake and weighs slightly less than a genuine coin. With a simple balance, what are the minimum number of weighings that are necessary to find the fake coin?

The answer to the last month's brain teaser was that the children were aged 1, 6 and 6.

If you have any comments to make on these monthly emails please let me know, and if you have any snippets which you would like included just send me the text or photos etc

I wish you all well in anticipation of the Antifouling Season which precedes the Sailing Season.

Regards

Michael Gregory
